Why You Should Install a Driver Update Program

There are many benefits to installing a good driver update program to your machine. Drivers accomplish what their name implies; they literally "drive" your computer. As a result, it's vitally important to keep these working at a powerful pace.

The Part of Your Computer that Facilitates Communication between Hardware and the OS

Drivers basically help your hardware communicate with your software. That is, they convert hardware inputs into language that your operating system can understand. So they really translate your hardware.

Why You Should Install a Driver Update Program

Your computer uses a variety of different drivers, depending on the component. You'll need several types of drivers: video for your graphics card, audio for your sound card, printer for your printer, USB for your USB devices, and, well, you get the idea.

Why You Need to Update

When drivers aren't working properly, these devices can't carry out their normal functions. In fact, they become totally ineffective. If you're dealing with problems related to any of these devices, then it's important to test it using the Device Manager.

The Device Manager, found within the Control Panel, is a utility that compartmentalizes all Windows devices so that you can observe them independently. You can view driver information about every device in the Control Panel. You can also find driver updates using the Device Manager. If there's a yellow exclamation mark displayed next to a device, that means that the device isn't working properly. You'll need to install new drivers.

You can install new ones by using automatic updates. Automatic updates actually scan the Internet to find what you need for your machine. You can actually toggle automatic updates on or off in the Control Panel. They're very useful for people who don't know much about performing manual updates. However, these updates can be somewhat general, which is why many PC users prefer to perform a manual update.

Dealing with Manual Updates

Manual updates only apply to specific hardware devices. If you know your way around a certain device, then you might want to try a manual update so that you can pinpoint the problem and solve it quickly. However, PC users who have experience with manual updates or with specific apparatuses find manual updates to be very effective at solving very particular driver problems.

You always have the option to download from a manufacturer. Most hardware manufacturers offer driver downloads on their websites. These downloads are often found with the "Support" or "Downloads" page of any given website. You can locate the driver you need at this website, download it, and install it. This is a very well known method of fixing these driver problems.

Windows Update and Driver Software

Windows Update is a very popular way of updating drivers. But, there are actually specific programs out there that work to update all of your computer's drivers simultaneously. These programs are wonderful for performing a complete sweep of all of your outdated drivers.

The main point is that implementing a strong driver update program is basically necessary to maintain PC health. There is a variety of ways that you can update your drivers, but you need to keep an eye on them to make sure they are up-to-date.

Windows 7 Slow Shutdown - How to Make Windows 7 Quickly Shut Down

Have you even encountered slow shutdown problem on Windows 7? Though sometimes, the installation shuts down fine (in around more than several minutes); other times it won't shut down at all - the Start button doesn't do anything, neither does Windows Explorer or Task Manager. Here, some guidelines will be discussed on how to quickly shout down Windows 7.

If noticing your Windows 7 suddenly become slow in shutdown, please first check if a particular program is slowing the machine when you shut down, e.g. an antivirus program, driver: go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools (in the left pane). On this screen the problem is sometimes shown. If not, you should turn to the tips below.

Driver Panel

Secondly, for those who are using Windows 7, they will annoy with the popping-up window when shutting down the computer indicating that there are many programs to turn off. You can directly modify this by going Group Policy Editor: just go to "Start"-> type "gpedit.msc" and press "Enter" -> Computer configuration ->Administrative Templates -> System -> Shutdown Options -> double click on "Turn off automatic termination of applications that block or cancel" and check "Enable".

Then open Registry Editor and go to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\, in the right side, please double click on "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" and change the Value Data and click on OK to save your settings.( Note: The Value Data should be from 2000 to 20000 Milliseconds. The default will be 12000 Milliseconds). With this simple modification, you will see an improvement on your Windows 7 shutdown speed.

Fourthly, to always avoid Windows 7 slow shutdown issue, you have to regularly defragment your hard drive. This simple process helps to rearrange the files on the disk making them always stay at the same place and much easier to be accessed to, speeding up shutdown speed. Just go to Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Note: It is recommended that you can remove the unwanted programs, folders, system junk files from the computer before the disk defragmentation.

Fifthly, bloated or corrupted Windows registry also results in a slow shutdown. The invalid registry items will make the system to move around too much to reach what it exactly needs, hence make the computer shut down slowly. To ensure a quicker shutdown, it is highly recommended that you should regular clear Windows registry to always enjoy a clean and compact registry.

Your VPN Doctor for Virtual Private Network Troubleshooting VPN Guide

Here are some troubleshooting guides for particular topics.

(1) Your Virtual Network Connection

(2) VPN Troubleshooting Error Messages

Your VPN Doctor for Virtual Private Network Troubleshooting VPN Guide

(3) VPN Modems Troubleshooting Guide

(4) VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide.

(1) Your Virtual Private Network Connection

Having trouble connecting to the Internet at home try these steps before calling for help.

1. Do you have an IP address? Try ipconfig /all. If you do not have an IP address reboot your PC. If that doesn't work power cycle your Cable/DSL modem and routers and reboot your PC again after the network devices are up and stable. Be sure all of your network cables are plugged in tight.

2. After your PC reboots check that your network adapter is active and packets are flowing. Perform the ipconfig /all check again.

3. Check your connectivity by pinging several Internet sites. If that does not work, ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1. If that fails, your adapter may not be working or it is not properly configured.

To check your IP address. From command prompt enter ipconfig /all (as shown in the picture) you should see an IP Address and several DNS Server addresses. The domain name system (DNS) is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into IP addresses and is required for browsing the Internet.

Ping 127.0.0.1 - loopback Test (as shown in the picture). The loopback test is used to check if the IP stack is responding. If it times out or you get an error the problem may occur if any one or more of the following conditions is true:

*The TCP drivers are corrupted

*The network adapter is not working

*Another service is interfering with IP

Check your network adapter, click the Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, and select Network Connections. Double click on the Local Area Connection or the Wireless Adapter whichever one you are using. Be sure its Connected. If you have multiple network cards disable the one you are not using.

There should be Packets displayed in both the Sent and Received counters. If the Received counter is 0 check that the adapter has an IP address. Select Properties.

Click the check boxes for Show icon and Notify me below. A twin PC icon will appear on the lower right portion of the taskbar in the tray area and will flash while sending and receiving packets. You can place your mouse over the icon to get the status and click on it to get more details.

Tracert displays the connection path to the target location and the number of hops. Each hop is the trip from one router to another. Tracert is a handy tool both for understanding where problems are in the network and for determining latency between hops.

Ping is used to determine whether a host exists and is active on the network and can determine the round trip time to the device. You can enter a host name or an IP address if you know it. If the request times out then the host is not reachable because it's offline or there is a problem with the connection. Try several sites, if none work then ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1 Also, if your DNS is not working or properly configured you can only ping the host with an IP address and you will not be able to browse the Internet.

If you are having intermittent problems, perform a ping -t for 5 to 6 minutes then hit CTRL C to see the results of the test to determine if you are dropping network packets (lost packets). If you are, this usually indicates an ISP problem or Cable/DSL modem problem. See VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide

(2) VPN Troubleshooting Error Messages

Q1 Error Message: Remote Host not responding: or Unable to Resolve the IP address of the Remote Server

Cause: This indicates that the Contivity VPN Switch never responded to the connection attempt. The problem could either be with the Contivity switch itself, (switch may be down) or your machine may be having a problem resolving the IP address.

Action: Try pinging your destination name (Example: VPN.something.com). If you received a message that says "Request Timed Out" from the ping command, call your ISP to make sure that their DNS is functioning correctly.

Q2 Error Message: Maximum number of sessions reached

Cause: This indicates that the maximum number of users for the account you are using are currently logged on.

Action: If you are the only user with VPN to your account, it is possible to get this error if you restarted a connection immediately after losing the dial-up connection to your ISP. This is because the Contivity VPN Switch takes up to one hour to determine that your connection has been dropped and log you off from your account.

Q3 Error Message: Login failed, Please consult the switch log for further information

Cause: The User Name or the Password is incorrect for the user name entered.

Action: Verify that the User Name you entered is correct and retype the Password before trying the connection again.

Q4 Error Message: The physical connection has been lost

Cause: Your connection to your ISP was disconnected.

Action: Re-establish your connection to your ISP before you re-establish the Contivity connection to the remote network.

Q5 Error Message: The secure Contivity connection has been lost

This message can result due to a number of different reasons, and there are several recommended actions you can take to try and re-connect.

Cause(s):

If you receive this error before the client connects then something is blocking a necessary port (such as ESP port 50). This can result if your firewall is not configured properly and is restricting the necessary port(s).

If you receive this error during a connection and you suddenly get the error it may mean one of the following:

1. Something closed the connection;

2. The VPN Contivity switch where you were trying to connect to thought your client was down or timed out;

3. Your local ISP did something that interrupted your network connection long enough for the VPN Contivity switch to identify your client was not responding;

4. The VPN Contivity switch that you are connected to has either logged your connection off or the Switch is no longer responding, or a device that does not support IPSEC NAT Traversal is causing the connection failure.

Action(s):

1. Try re-establishing the Contivity connection by clicking the Connect button. If this works, the connection was probably lost due to the Idle Timeout configured on the Contivity VPN Switch. If no data is transferred through the Contivity connection for a long period of time, 15 minutes or more, the Contivity VPN Switch automatically disconnects the connection;

2. If you were unable to successfully re-establish the Contivity Connection, the dial-up connection may be preventing data from traveling between the Contivity VPN Client and the Contivity VPN Switch. Hang up the dial-up connection and reconnect before you try to re-establish a connection to the Contivity VPN Switch;

3. If you are still unable to connect to the Contivity VPN Switch, open a Command Prompt and try pinging the Contivity VPN Switch using the host name or address that you specified in the Destination field.

(a) If you receive a "Destination Unreachable error" there is a routing problem at the ISP.

(b) If you receive a "Request Timed Out" error message, the Contivity VPN Switch is probably not available, and you should contact your Network Administrator.

4. If you keep getting this message and are unable to connect, then it may indicate that the Contivity VPN Switch is unable to communicate with the client because it is behind some kind of NAT (Network Address Translation) device. NAT (Network Address Translation) Traversal allows a number of devices on a private network to access the Internet simultaneously without each requiring its own external IP address. Most hotels and airports that provide Internet connectivity use NAT to connect to the Internet.

Q6 Error Message: Cannot Alter Routing Table

Cause: Message means the you the user, an application on your machine, or your ISP attempted to change the routing table via an ICMP redirect attempt and it was not successful. The client detects the attempt to make the change, determines it's a security breach and shuts down the client's connection. Any time you make a VPN connection, you cannot change the routing table, because the VPN Client views this as a security risk and you will get disconnected.

Some applications require an ICMP redirection in order to work such as a game or other third party software.

Action: If you receive this error and cant connect due to an ICMP redirect attempt, shut down any other applications you are using which may be causing the ICMP redirect attempt. If it is the ISP that is doing it, you will need to block the ICMP redirect request. You can identify that ICMP redirect has occurred, by seeing a message saying there has been an IP address routing table change.

Q7 Error Message: Receiving Banner Text Information

Cause: Message means you are experiencing a Banner Sock issue, and will see a window displaying the "Receiving Banner Text" message and then gets disconnected.

Actions:

1. Disable the firewall completely to test. This is a port 500 issue and often means that the you have a personal Firewall that is blocking port 500 or you have a router that does not support IPSEC pass-through, and the you are connecting to a VPN switch that does not have NAT Traversal enabled.

2. If using wireless, temporarily remove Wireless from the picture and focus on the Ethernet card. Check the Ethernet card speed and duplex parameters and then make sure that the hub, switch, or router that is on the other end has the same parameters. If not, the VPN connection will drop as the link goes up and down, or due to a large number of errors on the port from a duplex and or speed mismatch.

3. Firewall that blocks the connection, such that system will crash. (This will rarely happen) NSDF (Norton Symantec Desktop Firewall) and NSPF (Norton Symantec Personal Firewall) can do this though, if you do not trust the IP address of the VPN connection.

If you do not trust the VPN address of the VPN client, the firewall will cause you to crash. In your Internet browser click on "Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites" and add the destination VPN address(es) to your trusted sites.

Q8 Error Message: You already have the maximum number of adapters installed

Cause: You may have installed to many virtual adapters in your IP Stack

Actions:

1. Remove any unnecessary adapters;

2. Create multiple boot scenarios disabling the adapters that are not required for that function;

3. You may also get Banner Sock errors on Win 95 & 98 units with this condition;

4. For more information, see this Microsoft article: KB217744: Unable to Bind Protocols to More Than 5 Network Adapters (copy and paste into the search tool bar > enter).

Q9 Upgrade Errors: The following are some errors that may occur when trying to upgrade / install the Nortel VPN Client 4.65

Error (1): Failed to get Registry key value for NT_IPSECSHM

Cause: This is caused because an important registry key that cannot be found in the system registry.

Actions:

1. Uninstall and Reinstall the VPN Software

Error (2): Login Failure due to: Driver Failure

Cause: This is generally caused by either not having Admin rights to the PC or by trying to install/use a Nortel VPN client that predates the operating system.

Actions:

1. Ensure that you have admin rights to the PC.

2. Update/Install the most current version of the Nortel VPN client.

Error (3): Create socket failed with 10048.

Cause: This problem generally will occur whenever you have another VPN client software installed on the system. The most noted conflicting clients are: AOL, Cisco VPN Client(s), SSH Sentinel and PGP.

Actions:

1. Removing these clients will in most cases, resolve the issue.

(3) VPN Modems Troubleshooting Guide

Q1 Are Cable Modems supported for VPN Access?

Yes, you can use cable modems for VPN access. However you must be aware of the following conditions and be able to work within them:

*Some cable modems require that you log into an NT network to get authenticated.

*Some cable modems use a client similar to the Extranet Client for VPN and both will not run at the same time.

*Some cable modem Contracts/Acceptable Use Policies specify that you cannot use them for business purposes or they want to charge you another fee to use them for business purposes. Make sure you read your contract thoroughly.

*Your Cable modem provider is your ISP. Please see the VPN-connection-guide.html">ISP Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Q2 Why does my modem seem to perform erratically?

Always make sure that you do not let the operating system select a generic modem. If required, go to the appropriate web site for the vendor of the modem and get the updated INF file so that the proper parameters are configured for the modem.

Q3 Why do I always seem to get a slower connection speed than others with the same modem?

1. Always check the modem configuration to verify that its maximum speed has been selected.

2. It is common when auto-installing modems that the highest speed is not selected automatically.

3. Do not check the box that says run at maximum speed only.

Q4 I plugged my modem into the phone line at the hotel or customers office and now it does not work.

Always make sure that the phone line you are plugging into when visiting somewhere is an analog line not a digital one. Plugging into a digital line can permanently damage your modem, requiring a replacement unit. To avoid these situations please contact the local site phone support personnel.

Q5 Why cant I get a 56Kb V.90 connection from some locations that I go to?

Here are some of the reasons why you might not get a 56K connection:

1. You are located more than 3 ½ miles from your telephone companys central office (CO).

2. A SLICK or Subscriber Loop System is used in your area.

3. You are calling from a digital PBX system, which creates a Digital to Analog conversion and then an Analog to Digital conversion.

4. Your line contains digital pads or Robbed Bit Signaling (RBS), which can degrade your connection speeds.

5. Your wiring may be of poor quality.

6. Your modem's firmware may not be up-to-date. Check that your modem has the newest V.90 code installed with all the patches from the vendor's web site.

Q6 Why cant I get higher speed on my 56K v.90 modem into some NAG?

Here are some possible reasons:

1. A 56k v.90 modem is asymmetric by design where download speed can be as much as 56k but upload speed will be up to 33.6bps. For 56k to work, there must be only one analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion in your local phone loop. Thus when modems at both ends are analogue, 56k speeds will never be achieved as most PSTN exchanges run digital routing between the exchanges.

2. Some NAG sites use analog phone lines with Cisco and standard 56k modems, and most PC's dial-ups use a similar modem. Between the two modems, it limits the download speed to about 33.6kbps maximum.

3. Also, many users might experience lower connection speeds due to other reasons, such as more poor line quality. These factors will also contribute to the quality and speed of the line.

(4) VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide

Q1 If you are getting the message "Unable to Resolve the IP address of the Remote Server. Verify the Host Name in the destination field is correct." when trying to connect with the Extranet Client.

Try pinging your destination name (Example: VPN.something.com) and if it fails call your ISP to make sure that their DNS is functioning correctly.

Q2 Why do I get No Domain Available when dialing my ISP?

On your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection. Right click the mouse and select the properties button. Click on the Server Type tab and make sure that the Log On To Network box is unchecked.

Q3 Why do I seem to be running slowly through my VPN connection?

Try turning off the Software Compression option on your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection as the VPN client has it's own compression. Right click the mouse and select the properties button. Click on the Server Type tab and uncheck the

Q4 I keep getting busy signals when trying to connect to my ISP, what should I do?

Contact your ISP giving the numbers you are trying to connect to. Many times you will find that can give you an alternate number not published yet that will work just fine. If not you may need to find another ISP that provides better service.

Q5 When configuring the dial icon for my ISP what should I put in the DNS/WINS settings?

Your ISP should supply you with the DNS/WINS settings of your dial connection. Most only give you DNS, in this case just leave the WINS settings blank.

Q6 Why when I load the Extranet Client on my PC and Winpoet is installed on my machine it crashes or does not work properly?

There are issues running Winpoet software on the PC with the Nortel Extranet (VPN) Client.

To repair your system, boot in safe mode and uninstall the Winpoet Software.

A simple solution is to install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router. It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates Winpoet from the PC and provides the added benefit a NAT firewall with the ability to hook up to three other PCs.

A second option is to find a PPPOE Client that does not interfere with VPN Clients.

How to Create an XP Bootable USB Flash Drive

An XP bootable flash drive is a flash memory device that has been configured to allow you to boot up Windows XP on a computer by plugging in your flash drive device into the USB port. An XP bootable flash drive is highly useful for two purposes:

Booting up XP to troubleshoot on any computer that permits the boot. Transporting Windows applications between different physical locations such as home and the office.

To create an XP bootable flash drive, you first need a computer that has BIOS that will permit you to configure its USB port as a configurable device. Then you need a flash memory drive that is set up to be able to act as a booting device. It might not be readily known at first if you have a flash memory drive that is going to boot; one thing to look for when you access a computer's BIOS is whether or not the plugged-in flash drive appears in the listed items on the setup screen. Hopefully this happens, and you can then select this as the first device to check during your boot sequence. Some computers might require that you hit F10 to select your flash memory device.

How to Create an XP Bootable USB Flash Drive

Assuming that you have the computer and the drive that you need, now you need to get the software that will permit you to condense Windows XP onto your flash memory device. This includes: PE Builder, which is easy to install just by following the directions; you need to install it into your root directory and make a folder in C:PEBUILDER3110a called SRSP1. This will enable you to download Windows Server 2003 Service Pack One to this place. There are only two files you need from it: setupldr.bin and ramdisk.sys. Don't extract anything else, because you may totally corrupt your current version of Windows if you do. Specifically, never run the Windows Server 2003 SP1 executable file.

Once you have these files, run your PE Builder CD (Windows XP Professional CD). Make sure you hold down the [Shift] key to prevent Autostart from launching the CD. Launch PE Builder manually. When the Source field on the main PE Builder screen, enter the letter of the drive in which you put the CD. Check to see that the Output box contains BartPE and that the "None" option is selected in the Media Output panel. Once you have all this squared away, click Build. You can watch the progress of the compression.

When it's complete you're prepared to format and copy the Windows XP Professional bootable image to the UFD with the BartPE USB Installer. Open a Command Prompt window and use the CD command to switch to the pebuilder3110a folder. Next, insert the UFD into a USB port; note the drive letter to which it is assigned, as you'll need to enter it into your next command prompt that you type.

Let's imagine that it was assigned to drive E. You will now type the following command (take note of the last letter in the command). pe2usb -f e:

When Bart is all done, you just hit any key to exit the program, and you have your XP bootable flash drive.

Driving And Back Pain - Is Your Car Seat Causing Lower Back Pain?

A lot of us experience lower back pain whilst driving. A number of researches have investigated the relationship between driving and Back Pain, which uncovered uncovered some interesting results. One finding is a comparison of drivers in the USA and in Sweden found that 50% of people questioned in both countries reported low back pain.

So what is the connection of driving and back pain?

So far research has found three factors for low back pain whilst driving. The first one is the vibration from the engine (something that you can not change), the sitting position is the second factor and the third one is the length of time that we drive.

Driving And Back Pain - Is Your Car Seat Causing Lower Back Pain?

Scientists at laboratories have researched the effects of vibration of our body whilst driving. The Lumbar Spine(lower back) naturally resonates at a frequency of 4-5 Hertz and from research they found that this natural frequency can be distorted. This distortion can result into higher spinal loadings (compression) in the lower back, therefore causing an increased chance of low back pain. As mentioned before you can not change the vibration of the engine, but what you can do to reduce the effects of this on your lower back is to drive shorter periods at a time.

It is a lot easier to get comfortable in your seat when the car is stationary, a bit like sitting in a normal chair. But once you start driving the body will be subject to various forces like accelerations and decelerations, lateral movements from side to side and whole body vibrations. When we sit on a chair our feet, when on the floor, are used to support and stabilise the lower body. Whilst driving our abdominal muscles can not provide enough stability to our upper body and arms when turning the wheel. This will result in a significant increase of torsional stresses in the lower back, which in return will significantly increase the risk of low back pain.

To start with we should address one more important issue first - we all are guilty when it comes to adjusting our car seats correctly! In 2004 one of the largest car insurance companies (I won't mention a name, after all you may think I am paid to write about this), released the findings of a research into how we sit in our car. (about 2.000 people were involved in this).

The research resulted in the following -

The headrest was found to be in an incorrect angle when driving of 61% of people involved in the study. This will increase the chance of ruptures of the spinal ligaments or worse when involved in an accident.
50% showed a slouched or hunched position over the steering wheel.
About a third of the drivers had back pain whilst driving.
25% tilted their heads or shifted in their seats each time they had to look into the 'rear view mirror'.
Wearing unsuitable footwear or clothing happened to 34% of the drivers.
Please find below a list of 10 ways that can help to improve your seating position, make your driving experience more comfortable.

The Seat

Make sure that your bottom sits all the way in the back of the seat - where the base and the back of the seat meet. This will help to make you sit more upright and maintain the natural curvature of the spine, minimizing the stress on the spinal ligaments. If your seat has a lumbar roll built in have this all the way out - most cars with lumbar support that i tried do not allow enough support fom this lumbar roll, therefore it would be best to have it all the way out.

The Base length and Height of the Seat

The base of the seat should never touch the back of your knees and the front of the base should be slightly higher then the back, helping to provide more support and allowing you press the pedals without changing your spinal posture.

The Backrest

First relax back into your seat, place the seat at about a 10-15 degrees incline from the vertical position. If this feels unnatural to you then it probably means that the backrest is not upright enough for you. This can result into neck strain and / or coccyx (sitting bone) pain. Move the backrest more upright or if that doesn't help you can place a small towel (folded in three) against the midspine, between the shoulder blades.

The Headrest

Have you ever noticed when watching an American movie that the headrests are often missing from the seats - it makes me crinch each time i see this (ooch). So much for giving a good example to our children. The position of your headrest will not only help to minimise the injuries of an accident but also to help to allow a better posture. The bony bit at the back of your head (known as the 'inion') is a good guiding point, the headrest should be level with this. There should be about 2.3 cm's (1 inch for the non -metrics) between the back of your head and the headrest, when you are in the sitting position as described earlier. This to absorb shock as much as possible. This allows for the ligaments and the muscles of your neck to control the posture of your head better and giving better support in case of an accident.

Seat - Pedal distance

Make sure you have the distance between seat and the pedals so that when operating the pedals this does not cause you to over strech your legs or twist your body in any way. Thus your legs should not be straight when pushing the throttle or clutch all the way down. Obviously your knees should not be bend to the point you cannot easily move from one pedal to another. It is normally advised to have your knees bend about 45 degrees.

The Arm position

Your arms should be as relaxed as possible, elbows bend around 20-30 degrees. If your steering wheel is adjustable have it in the mid to lower position (make sure the wheel does not partially obstruct the instrument panel), this will help to reduce the stress on your shoulders. Your hands should be positioned at '10 past10' and not as is suggested left hand at 9 o'clock and right hand at 3 o'clock.

The Armrests

If your seat has armrests then it is advised to use these. As a guidance you should position the armrests so that they gently support the elbows, any more will cause the shoulders to rise and increase the change of straining your neck.

The Mirrors

These should only be adjusted once you have positioned your seat as described above. If not sure then please revisit the information again how to adjust your seat. The mirrors should be adjusted to allow you to freely look into them without the need of having to move your head much. you either have adjusted the mirrors incorrectly or you are to close to the steering wheel.

Adjusting Seat at intervals

This sound great in theory but for most of us this may be akward whilst driving. For those who have electric seats it is easier (although it always advicable to stop first), just reach for the buttons to adjust the seat without the need to take our attention of the road. It is said that you should be doing this every 30 mins. to reduce the incidents of back pain. This allows to change the pressure that is placed on the spine is varied regularly. Once arrived at your destination it would be good to strech! (don't worry if it looks funny, soon everybody in the carpark will join in - you can be proud having started a new 'healthy' trend)

Have breaks

We all have seen the 'take a break' sign along the roads, helping you to avoid falling asleep behind the wheel. Taking a break helps your back as well, so when you need to take a rest you can have a strech at the same time to help your back. An hour maximum is the current thinking, although these tips should be taken as a general rule. This is a good time to adjust your seating position!

Social Networking - What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages?

Are you aware of the growing trend of people spending so many hours in front of their computers? Most probably, they might be spending so much time in Twitter or in Facebook. Without a doubt, social networking is one of the inevitable forces on the web right now. Let us explore the advantages and the disadvantages of these social networking sites.

Social networking sites opened the doors to faster and better communication. Here are the advantages of these sites:

Connection

Social Networking - What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages?

In today's fast-paced lives, social networking is being used in the corporate world because of its influence. It has the power to connect people and businesses. It can be employed to build relationships and connect with clients. A few years ago, people only stay in touch through email or phone calls. Now, they can connect through an easy medium that is more fun and interactive. And the great thing is that they can share photos and videos, update real-time news, and do all these in a simple and convenient manner. Thus, companies have used the power of Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites to promote their businesses.

Feedback
In today's fast mode of communication, social networking sites allow you to ask for feedback and receive it instantly. Thus, you can develop your site, your product, or your brand in a snap. This is truly a powerful way to conduct market research and improve one's business down the road.

Low Cost

Another advantage of social sites is that it allows us to communicate for both personal and business purposes in a cheap way, if not for free. In business, you can definitely find prospective clients through social networking sites without spending a fortune in the usual advertising platforms such as print or television. If your business is still small and you have limited budget, social network sites are definitely a must-try in promoting your products and services.

When there are advantages, the power of social networking sites has its own set of disadvantages too. Here are a few that you need to be aware of:

Time Consuming

Because it is free, campaigns can be really time-consuming. The key here is finding tools, software, and other solutions that will make the whole process simpler and faster.

Identity Theft

Because of the lack of anonymity, you are exposing your identity to the public. This may be used for other purposes that you may not have knowledge or permission. Thus, you need to be careful with scams and identity theft. There are a few ways to combat these problems though. With the use of the technology, you have to be aware of the risks and find the best solutions to prevent these problems from happening to you and your business.

Conclusion

There are advantages and disadvantages to the use of social networking sites. Nevertheless, it is paramount to make use of this technology to survive, especially in this time of cut-throat business promotions. When done right, it is cheap, effective, and can take your business to the next level. As far as the disadvantages are concerned, it is a matter of finding the right solutions to these drawbacks.

The Difference Between Strategy and Tactics

"Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." - Sun Tzu

What are the fundamental differences between strategy and tactics? Even the savviest on-line and off-line entrepreneurs frequently confuse the two.

Tactics are the day-to-day activities that are repeatable in your business and relatively clear-cut. Like blocking and tackling in football, they comprise the basic components of the jobs and the daily activities of any organization - or any business - no matter the size.

The Difference Between Strategy and Tactics

They are such things as SEO Campaigns, writing an article, creating a website, making a sales call, or perhaps joining an on-line community such as StomperNet, or Rich Schefren's Business Growth System. Tactics are specifically created and selected to reach particular and measurable objectives.

Tactics are the actual ways in which the strategies are executed. They may also include such things as newsletters, press releases, teleseminars, blogs, advertising, websites, and any other tool that your target markets are usually exposed to.

Tactics are easy to copy. If one company observes innovations in another company's products, for example, the observing company can easily duplicate what it has seen, or develop something comparable if straight duplication is not possible. As soon as the process or product is copied, the competitive advantage of the innovation recedes or disappears.

If you are not careful, tactics may end up being simply quick fixes that can bring short term gain, but they will not lead to long-term success unless rigorously applied; and they must be part of an overall plan for success. Therefore, it is critical to look at each tactic from the standpoint of what it will do to achieve your overall strategy.

Most businesses today tend to be tactically focused. You work diligently every day in your office, doing task after task, but most often without a strategic focus.
Being mainly tactically focused will result in a lot of ups and downs in your business, and very likely a long, slow (or very fast) decline in the value of your business.

Strategy, on the other hand, is perspective, that is, your Future Picture and direction. Strategy involves the "big picture" - the overall plan, and how those plans will achieve your goals and objectives. It involves deciding who the important stakeholders are, and which of them will be the recipients of your messages (i.e., "target audiences"), or the targets of your activities.
Your strategy is the framework, your compass that you will use to make decisions that will benefit the future outcome of your business. Strategy is the set of directions you make to enhance your situation and position within your overall market.

Without a well thought out strategy, your business is merely like a person wandering around uselessly in the dark. There is neither a planned direction of where to go in the future, nor which methods to use to get there. Tactics and strategy are always relative to one another, and together they bridge the gap between ends and means.

To succeed in your business environment, it is vital to plan a strategy that connects your activities to your overall plans. If you have a solid understanding of where you want to be at some defined point in the future, it becomes a relatively simple exercise to create a set of activities to get you there. If you know where you are going, there will be a way to get there - always.

Recognize that there is a difference between strategy and tactics, and do not confuse the two. The company that clearly understands that difference is the business that will be the most successful, the most durable - and the most profitable.

Caffeine and Headaches - Caffeine Addictions - Short Medical Article

Coffee drinkers - Caution!

Whats the most frustrating physical problem you face in this modern stressful life?? Yes headache!! Common but disgusting.

Got a headache! Whats your first thought? Hmmm, a cup of coffee!! Coffee is the first choice to get relief from headache for many. This is because it is an easy- to- get remedy which gives immediate beneficial effects.

Caffeine and Headaches - Caffeine Addictions - Short Medical Article

The main component of coffee is caffeine which jolts the central nervous system and act as a stimulant causing increase in alertness and awareness. It is used in many of the headache relievers like Excedrin and Fioricet.

Caffeine and its sources:
Caffeine is bitter crystalline alkaloid which acts as psychoactive stimulant.

It is present in many beverages like coffee, tea, soft drinks and energy drinks and also in small amounts in beans, leaves and fruits of some plants. Of these coffee occupies the first place.

Can Caffeine be a Cause of headaches:
The causes for headache can be stress, nutritional factors, and blood sugar levels commonly. Tension headache can be caused by muscle contraction in face, scalp, neck, shoulder and jaw when subjected to stress or even in cases of severe anxiety and depression. But migraine which is most common in women is caused by dilation of blood vessels.

Now an unexpected cause of headaches... caffeine!

Caffeine and headaches relation:
The most common occurrence of headache is due to blood vessels increasing in size and they gradually wreak havoc on the nerves surrounding them. So most of the headache relievers focus on bringing the blood vessels back to their normal size. Caffeine in small amounts can help to achieve this as it acts as vasoconstrictor.

But the darker side is caffeine when used in large amounts especially along with sugar can backfire and cause expansion of blood vessels and thereby resulting in headache.

Addictive nature of caffeine:
Can't miss your morning cup of coffee? Or can't start your work without enjoying your coffee daily? Then you are one of the millions suffering from caffeinism that is 'addiction to caffeine' or simply 'caffeine dependency'.

Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance all over the world. Unlike other abused drugs its consumption is legal and also unregulated in most of the countries. But caffeine can act as a slow poison.

Why addiction to caffeine?

Intakes of caffeine causes rush of adrenaline which results in boost of energy. But when we fail to take caffeine at the usual time, the adrenaline levels decrease and withdrawal symptoms start. This drags us to coffee shop again and the addiction starts.

When a regular coffee consumer goes without his/her fix, 'caffeine withdrawal' symptoms start to appear. These include drowsiness, coffee cravings, irritability, mood swings, headache and loss of appetite, upset stomach.

Overcoming caffeine withdrawal symptoms:
Best one is decreasing caffeine consumption gradually.

Taking additional vitamins like vitamin B 12, vitamin C and vitamin E, B-complex can help in detoxifying the body or mineral supplements

How much of caffeine is excess caffeine?
Generally 300mg of caffeine per day is agreed to be safe. This would be the amount in 2 cups of coffee. For pregnant woman this should more less.

Alternatives of coffee:
Green tea, licorice tea, black tea can be very helpful.

Internet Marketing in 2011 - Social Bookmarking

Internet marketing is a tricky beast. However it can be tamed with the right plan. One major key that I have recently learned a great deal about is "social" bookmarking. What a difference it makes in promotion of your website, blog, product page, etc. If you are unaware of social bookmarking, it is a unique and phenomenal online marketing tool...truly like no other. It utilizes the power of recommendation in an extremely special way and can do it on a massive scale.

We all know that a bookmark is something that holds our place to remind of a page that we were on. We use bookmarks on our computers for the same reason. A "social" bookmark is a link that marks a webpage, not only for the individual, but also for others to view and share all across the world wide web. That's powerful stuff!

The popularity of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and others have shown us the internet marketing power of word of mouth advertising, potentially WORLDWIDE! People love to discover new products and services and love to share what they have found. There are numerous social bookmarking sites to choose from though some are more widely used than others. Any and all could prove beneficial! No matter what type of online marketing you do, social bookmarking should be a part of any plan.

Internet Marketing in 2011 - Social Bookmarking

Don't be afraid to bookmark your own sites, in fact, it's mandatory. When someone sees that your link has been marked, they can bookmark it themselves. Also, even better if your content is relevant and the person enjoys it enough to share perhaps on their blog or website, fan page or portal. Good, quality content, with enough work on your part, will eventually get passed around. For you that means traffic! And that's the whole point. Do your research as some of the bookmarking sites are SEO friendly and some are not. It's worth making note however that all can be beneficial for SEO.

So try it yourself! There are some great tools out there for bookmarking many of the different sites all in one place and in a matter of minutes. I use SocialMarker and have been pleased for the most part. Bookmark your sites, blogs, articles etc! You wont be sorry. That combined with writing articles, blogs and creating a press release is a darn good start on getting your name out and traffic in.

I hope you enjoyed my article. I've got a video series I'd like to give you for free. In the series, you'll discover how to make money online right from home. How Skype Works

Skype is a software application that allows you to make free phone calls to more than 75 million people worldwide, and shockingly cheap calls to practically everywhere else on Earth! As a result of that, Skype has become the fastest growing service in the history of the Internet. Recently, the company was acquired by eBay, another step forward towards achieving the final goal of making Skype the world's largest communication company.

Skype is easy to install and use. It allows its users to make crystal clear calls, regardless of their location, send instant messages, switch seamlessly between text and voice communication, make video calls, conference calls, transfer files, call landlines and cell phones for a fraction of the cost of a traditional call. Skype is truly making a revolution in the way we communicate.

But how does it actually work? This article focuses on describing the Skype network and the technology behind it.

How Skype Works

Skype is a type of peer-to-peer Voice-Over-IP client, based on the Kazaa file sharing program. The developers of Skype claim that it provides better voice quality than similar applications like MSN and Yahoo Messenger. It also encrypts calls end-to-end.

There are two types of machines in the Skype network - ordinary host (Skype Client) and Super Node (SN). An ordinary host is the computer of a regular user who has the application installed and connects to the network in order to communicate with other users. The Super Nodes are the end-point of ordinary hosts in the network. In other words, ordinary hosts connect to the Super Nodes. Any computer with a public IP and proper hardware configuration can be a SN. An ordinary host must connect to a super node and must register itself with the Skype login server for a successful login. The Skype login server is the only central unit in the whole network. It stores the usernames and respective passwords of all Skype users. Nslookups have shown that this server is located in Denmark. All Super Nodes connect to the login server in attempt to verify the username password of the client. It stores your Skype Name, your e-mail address, and an encrypted representation of your password.

If you are a regular Skype user, then your computer is considered an 'ordinary host' that connects to a Super Node. The Super Nodes are servers, located in different parts of the world. But your Skype client, must know to which SN it has to connect. Therefore, every Skype client (SC) maintains a local table that contains the IPs and corresponding ports of Super Nodes. This is called a host cache and it stored in the Windows Registry of the given SC. So basically, every time you load up Skype, it reads the date from the host cache, takes the first IP and port from there and tries to connect to this SN. If the connection fails for some reason (the SN is offline; it is no longer part of the network, etc) then it reads the next line from the table. In case it fails to connect to any of the IPs listed, the Skype returns a login error upon start-up. Hence, the host cache must contain at least one valid entry in order for the application to connect to the network and work properly. Valid entry means an IP address and port number of an online Super Node. The path to the table in the Windows Registry is HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE / SKYPE / PHONE / LIB / CONNECTION / HOSTCACHE. You can verify that on your computer by opening the Start menu, then click Run and enter 'regedit', without the dashes. Of course, the exact path could be different in the next versions of the application.

As a concept, Super Nodes were introduced in the third-generation P2P networks. They allow improved search performance, reduced file-transfer latency, network scalability, and the ability to resume interrupted downloads and simultaneously download segments of one file from multiple peers. Basically, they help ordinary hosts connect to each other and guide efficiently the encrypted network traffic.

Super Nodes are also responsible for the 'Global Indexing'. This technology enables you to search for other users in the network. The company guarantees that it will find a user if he has registered and has logged in during the last 72 hours.

A very interesting moment about the Skype network is that it 'self-modifiable'. If you have the application installed, your computer may turn into a Super Node, without you even knowing it, because those capabilities don't have a noticeable impact on a computer's performance. SNs basically store the addresses of up to several hundred Skype users, without carrying any voice, text or file-transfer data. In that manner, the more Skype users come online, the more supernodes become available to expand the capacity of the network.

Skype routes the traffic intelligently by choosing the optimum data transfer path. Since it uses either TCP or UDP protocol, it breaks the whole data stream into separate packets, which can take different paths to the end destination. The final arrangement is done at the receiving end.

As far as safety and privacy are concerned, Skype uses Advanced Encryption Standard, known as Rijndel, used also by the U.S. Government organizations to protect sensitive data. Skype uses 256-bit encryption.

The programmers of Skype have implemented wideband codecs which allows it to maintain a good sound quality at a bandwidth of 32kb/s and allow frequencies between 5-8,000Hz to pass trough.

Your list of contacts, the application stores in the Windows Registry. This is called the Buddy list and once again, it is digitally encrypted. So, the list is local for every machine, or in other words, it's not downloaded from the central server.

Let's briefly describe the tasks of the Skype client. First it connects to the network. It then listens on particular ports for incoming calls, refreshes the host cache table, uses wideband codecs, maintains the buddy list, encrypts messages and determines if there is a firewall or not.

The login process:

The login process is the most important one and it consists of several phases. As mentioned, SC must connect to a valid SN in order to authenticate the username and password with the Central Server.

Skype gets the fist IP from the host cache, sends it a UDP packet and waits for response. If there is no response after 5 seconds, it sends a TCP packet to the same IP. It tries to establish a TCP connection to the HC IP address and port 80 (HTTP port). If still unsuccessful, it tried to connect to IP address and port 443 (HTTPS port). If this does not work either, it reads the next address in the HC. If Skype is unable to connect to a SN, it will report a login failure.

The application comes with several build-in addresses of different nodes, called bootstrap super nodes.

If the connection attempt is successful, the client must authenticate the user name and password with the Skype login server, which holds all user names and passwords and makes sure they are unique across the whole network. When the application connects to an SN, it receives an up-to-date list of other active SNs, so it has the most current information.

The Media Transfer process:

The video/voice communication through Skype is established through UDP. The trick here is that quite often, one of the users is behind a firewall or a router, hence it doesn't have a real IP address. But if both Skype clients are on real IPs, then the media traffic flows directly between them over UDP. The size of the voice packet is 67 bytes, which is actually the size of UDP payload. One second conversation results in roughly 140 voice packets being exchanged both ways, or 3-16 kilobytes/s.

If one of the callee or both of them do not have a public IP, then they send voice traffic to another online Skype node over UDP or TCP. The developers of Skype have preferred to use UDP for voice transmission as much as possible.

An interesting fact is that even if both sides are not speaking, voice packets will still be flowing between them. The purpose of these so called 'silent packages' is to keep the connection alive.

Conclusion:

There are several factors responsible for the success of Skype. First of all, the voice quality is better compared to other applications. It works without a problem on computers with firewall. It is very easy to install and use. Skype's security is also a big advantage. Everything that is being transferred across the network is being encrypted to ensure privacy. As a result of that, even if hackers intercept the data being transferred, they won't be able to decode it.

The Skype application does not include any adware or spyware. But, there are cases when third parties have managed to add such functionalities (not only for Skype), so it's really important that you download it from the right place. Therefore, do it either from the official website, or from respected sites as http://www.freesecuredownloads.com/skype/index.html.

Social Bookmarking - The Benefits and Pitfalls of "Folksonomy"

Social bookmarking has become extremely popular and is a very useful information sorting and searching mechanism in today's Web 2.0 page.

It has a benefit in the sense that the users who are searching for and discovering information are then bookmarking and adding as favorites that information because it is useful. Therefore if it is useful to one person, it is more than likely relevant to an entire group of people.

This counteracts the search engine problem of relevancy, where a search engine can be fooled into thinking a document is relevant, but a human being cannot.

Social Bookmarking - The Benefits and Pitfalls of "Folksonomy"

The process is that a user finds a site that is of use to them in the present and could be in the future, and is then bookmarked in their favorites list. Before social bookmarking, this is where it ended. But in this case, that bookmark is then submitted to a directory which holds collections of bookmarks.

That bookmark is then tagged with a series of words or phrases that roughly describes the content, the context and any related subjects by the user. The bookmark is then made publicly available so that other users can search against the tags and find information that is useful and relevant, because a human being has validated it.

On top of this, other users can then update the tags, effectively fine tuning the search fields that the search engine will search against. In this way, the social bookmarking mechanism works in the same way as a wiki, as the users themselves update and maintain the tags that accompany a bookmark. Over time, useless and irrelevant information will be weeded out from the tags, therefore making future searches more efficient and even more relevant.

This system of social bookmarking and classification is known as "folksonomy", which is a word formed out of conjoining the words "taxonomy" and "folk". Taxonomy is a process of hierarchical and metric-based scientific classification. Crossing this word with the idea of folk, i.e. groups of people, leads us to the word folksonomy.

While this is a very useful community-based system, there are some downfalls to folksonomy and social bookmarking in general.

Because it is a social and group managed system, the system has no definitive and official vocabulary for its tagging mechanism. Effectively, the tags are dictated by the users community, so therefore what one person means by the use of one word could be completely different to another person. This ambiguity can sometimes cause difficulty in the actual searches themselves.

Also, because it is a collective and collaborative version of taxonomy, hierarchical relationships can be difficult to define. A person may be able to a bookmark with the word "diamond" and "gemstone", but will not be able to indicate that gemstone is a parent class of diamond. Yet, social bookmarking, due to the very same interaction of users that can potentially cause confusion in the tagging, exhibits the dynamics of a self organizing system. This means that, over time, a common trend appears in how a tag is defined for subjects with specific words.

Another downfall is the continual battle on the Internet with spam. Some spam distributors will bookmark a site for the distribution of spam using popular and upwardly trending tagging keywords, in an attempt to promote the site in line with any frequently searched for topics. However, the majority of social bookmarking system operators work hard to continuously update their security and validation systems to ensure that spammers do not interfere with the sites main purpose.

Which ever way you look at it, social bookmarking is here to stay. It has its downfalls and it's problems, yet it is highly useful in finding both validated and relevant information. This is something that search engine algorithms are continually tweaked and modified for, because they have a problem with it. For instance, there are several projects right now that involve search engines where every page is validated by a human being, the Open Directory Project being one of them. Yet, this is nearly identical to the same mechanism that social bookmarking follows!

If you are a creator of legitimate Internet resources and want to look into social bookmarking as a way to promote your site, social bookmarking may well be a very useful tool for you. Unfortunately, it can take a lot of time given all the various social bookmarking sites that exist on the Internet.

Consider looking into time-saving tools like this one [http://bookmarkingdemon.net/bookmarking-demon/], which will allow you to automate the process of submitting your social bookmarks to a multitude of sites.

When you're ready to read more about the subject come and visit us at [http://www.bookmarkingdemon.net]
